I recommend doing some private English classes. You start with conversation classes so there's less pressure to be a great teacher then you can build up your timetable. If you want to get some ideas or practice you could do a TEFL course, e.g. http://www.tefl-iberia.com/ and start making a decent living in Barcelona. Good luck!

Hola ! I am very depressed in new city Barcelona. I am master student in Artificial Intelligence. In order to complete my master i need money. I was looking on internet for getting part time job. But all the website suggest to register and upload CV. But they never response back. I don't speak Spanish. But with English in programming field if you can guide me where can i get job , i would be thankful to you.

I am learning Image Processing, Expert System Design, Machine Learning.
I have Programming knowledge in C/C++ , CLIPS Object Orientation Language, MATLAB, 8051 Assembly Language.

I will certainly miss your Barcelona blog, Jeremy, but can understand very well the decision to move to a place that is better for your family. It is quite disappointing to learn that Spain still has so many issues with immigrants and foreigners, although I think this is happening all over Europe. Very sad, that.

I know the pain... I moved here 5 weeks ago, first I did a Spanish course and since September I am starting my studies here( my last year). I would like to work part time to be able to study and also to be able to fully enjoy my life in Spain. I am loking for a job for more than a week now... most offers are serious full time jobs. Because I am still student and speak spanish like a caveman I have decided to look for an internships... and some of them are also full time- so for real they are entry level jobs, but to pay you less or nothing they called them interns.

I see there is much intersting in Barcelona. I want to come there this fall and take part in a poker tournament. The only problem is that it's soooooo difficult to find any infor concerning Barcelona and the events there. Even that poker event, the only site that had info about that was this one - http://www.isop.com/en/isop/179-isop-barcelona-2010. Can you tell me where else can I get some info about Barcelona events, and especially poker events?

Some tips to travel to Barcelona:

Hire a car only if you are going to spend several days there, so you can visit also the surroundings and places like Montserrat, Port Aventura, Costa Brava, etc.

Be careful with pickpockets in metro and city center.

If you are going to travel with your family rent a centric apartment (here they have holiday apartments in barcelona city center and they give out a free pocket guide, which is always useful).

If you are going with friends it's a good idea too, but then you may want to look for something cheaper (here they have cheap accommodation in barcelona, from 19 € per night or so).

Hate to say it, but the large majority of English is informed by the kings historically speaking... Case in point: the progressive aspect. English inherited this from French, a language spoken exclusively by the aristocracy. The other primary component of the English language is its Germanic origins, especially lexicography. However, the populist trait of the language you romanticize is nothing more, in general, than colloquialism. Formal, academic, or "intelligent" speak breaks down primarily into French and Latin origin, exclusively because of the aristocratic lineage.

If I were hardpressed, I would acknowledge an equal influence from populist (read: Germanic; i.e. Peasant foundations) and aristocrat alike. A basic breakdown is as follows: 1/3 French origin, 1/3 Germanic, 1/3 Latin et al.

Though you do have a point that the grammar/syntax/pronunciation/morphology/etc. isn't governed under a central authority. However, globalization and Hollywood have had a larger impact on the manner in which English is spoken than any other external or internal pressure in history (including British imperialism, Crusades, world wars, etc.), and in this regard one could consider the American/Californian pronunciation and grammar --i.e. the intricacies of such a soft-dialect-- to be just as much a central authority, as it is dictated by one loose organization.
